Dear Colleagues:

This month, find out more about an entrepreneur who made millions just sitting on her sofa and eating cheese curls. There’s also a link to an article where I talk about perfecting negative self-talk, and . . . April Fool!

Donna's Book Pix:
Soul Matters — The Spiritual Dimension of Holistic Healthcare
Mabel Aghadiuno

This book looks at the meaning of holistic healthcare and explores the spiritual dimension of health through patient stories. It shows how to figure out when a patient’s distress has a spiritual dimension, the implications of this for healthcare professionals, and ways in which spiritual factors can be addressed and discussed within healthcare.

Cool Nursing Web Site:
Disaster in Haiti

The site also features links to resources including volunteer opportunities, continuing education, blogs and Tweets, and free, live events and previously recorded webinars. Career Article:
Staying Positive in a Negative World - How new nurses can banish their negative self-talk

News You Can Use:
Fatty Foods as Addictive as Heroin
According to a new study, published in the Nature Neuroscience journal, when rats consumed a lot of high-fat, high-calorie food, it led to compulsive eating habits — similar to a drug addiction. The study looked at three groups of rats — one group was fed regular food, the second was fed fatty foods for an hour a day, and the third was fed fatty foods for up to 23 hours per day. The third group began to eat compulsively and began to require more and more fatty food to get the "rush" to the pleasure centers of the brain. Find out more.

Quote of the Month:
Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Read Donna’s Tweets on Twitter – even if you don’t have an account!

  • A favorite book: The Story of My Life by Helen Keller. Very inspirational. What an intelligent, gifted women she was. What are your favs?
  • To be an effective healer, you must work on your own healing everyday - physical, emotional, spiritual. You must practice what you preach.
  • You know you're a nurse if . . . you're always scouting out where the nearest AED is in a public place — just in case!

Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Andrea Crossman, RN, BA, BS,, is the founder of Holistic Doula NYC. She says her goal with every woman is to support her birth and her choices and to contribute whatever she can to make it the best experience possible. She does this by ensuring that each woman has the information she needs to make the best decisions for herself and her baby.

Crossman does what she can to ensure that everyone she works with is supported. She says she’s had the "privilege to work with teens, same sex couples, single mothers, and other women who may have felt the birth system was not always geared toward their needs."

She is a holistic RN, Reiki Master, and member of the American Holistic Nurses Association with a BS from Columbia University. She is two-thirds of the way through a nursing master’s degree from NYU with the dual specialty of Holistic and Adult Nurse Practitioner. She has also worked as a labor and delivery nurse.
