Cooked: An Inner City Nursing Memoir
by Carol Karels, RN
In the 1970s, a suburban teenager becomes a nursing student at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital, which is located in a dangerous, gang-ridden, and drug-infested area. While studying, she faces rampant poverty, racism, neglect, abuse, and chaos. The book offers a penetrating look into the workings of an inner-city, public healthcare system.

Cool Nursing Web Site:
American Association of Colleges of Nursing
The AACN calls itself "the national voice for baccalaureate and graduate-degree nursing education." On its website, you’ll find resources for deans, faculty, students, legislators, and all nurses. It offers information about CCNE accreditation of nursing programs, CNL certification, end-of-life care, geriatric nursing, trends in nursing education, scholarship and financial aide resources, interesting nursing facts and more. For more, visit www.aacn.nche.edu.

Career Article:
Foster Horizontal Respect
If you’ve been in nursing a while, you may have heard the expression "horizontal hostility." This term is used to describe the workplace phenomenon of coworkers in high stress jobs taking out their frustrations on each other with abuse, nastiness, and indifference. Read more.

Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Penny Warner, RN, BSN, is the owner of The Texas Lice Squad™, a professional head lice removal treatment center. In addition to helping families eliminate lice, Peggy offers a variety of preventative steps in an attempt to safeguard families from reoccurring cases. She also offers head checks to confirm head lice infestation before beginning treatment, non-toxic, pesticide-free products, and professional combing to ensure the removal of all nits and lice.

Penny, who is board certified in nursing administration, was a critical care nurse for 12 years. She also served as the director of healthcare improvement, risk management, and patient safety, as well as the accreditation coordinator for one of the largest hospital systems in Texas.

Penny founded The Texas Lice Squad™ after fighting head lice on her own children. "You would think being a nurse I would have had a handle on how to eliminate head lice. It just wasn’t that easy. I knew if I was having such a hard time that I couldn’t be the only mom who needed help," Peggy explains. "I started researching head lice and was amazed at the amount of misinformation out there. What I quickly learned was that better head lice education was the real key to ending the cycle."

By providing hands-on help teaching their clients the proper steps towards prevention, The Texas Lice Squad™ is able to help families safely eliminate head lice and stop the reoccurring cases.
