Career Article:
How Nancy Nurse Got Her Groove Back
Nancy became a nurse 15 years ago. Back then, she was altruistic and full of energy and enthusiasm. A decade and a half later, she found herself unhappy, disgruntled and disillusioned. She frequently proclaimed that nursing was a lousy career and discouraged prospective nurses from getting into the profession. Nancy focused on the negative aspects of her daily work. Coworkers who once enjoyed her company now found her to be difficult, nasty and apathetic. Nancy's miserable attitude was affecting the entire department and her patient care. She was in a career rut and felt powerless to change her circumstances. Read more.

News You Can Use:
Listen Up
Listening to an MP3 player during your morning run may be more dangerous than you think. Researchers at the University of Maryland examined statistics from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and other databases and found 116 accidents that took place from 2004 to 2011 in which vehicles injured pedestrians wearing headphones or ear buds. The majority of victims were male (68%) and under the age of 30 (67%). More than half of vehicles involved in the crashes were trains, and 89% of cases occurred in urban counties. The majority of case reports (74%) stated that the victim was wearing headphones at the time of the crash, and 29% mentioned that a warning was sounded before the crash. Researchers concluded that, although further research is necessary, headphones may pose a safety risk to pedestrians, especially in areas with moving vehicles.

Quote of the Month:
The moment you think you're 'too old' to learn something new, you begin to decline. Age is a state of mind and learning new things helps to keep you young and engaged in life. That's the secret to eternal youth — never stop learning — at any age.
— Donna Wilk Cardillo, RN

Ode to My Nursing Cap
While rummaging through the attic recently, I came upon my nurse's cap. Now more than 40 years old, it had become a bit yellow and misshapen. As I held it in my hands, I felt a nostalgic smile cross my lips and was flooded with memories of what that cap had meant to me over the years. Read more.
