Risqué Waitress Uniform May Tarnish Nurses’ Image
A Tempe, Ariz., restaurant has come under the Center for Nursing Advocacy’s fire for garbing waitresses as "naughty nurses." Waitresses at the Heart Attack Grill — a theme restaurant whose specialties include the Quadruple Bypass Burger and Flatliner Fries — wear revealing, provocative outfits.

While no one would mistake the wait staff for genuine nurses, they present an image of nursing that harms the profession and recruitment to nursing in the midst of the most persistent nursing shortage ever, the Center for Nursing Advocacy says.

A statement on the organization’s website www.nursingadvocacy.org goes on to say: "Constantly linking powerful sexual images so closely to the profession of nursing — to even the fantasy idea that working nurses are sexually available to patients — reinforces long-standing stereotypes about nursing. Those stereotypes continue to discourage practicing and potential nurses, encourage sexual violence, and lessen respect for nursing."

Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Doris Young, RN, PhD, founder of Doris Young Associates, specializes in coaching nurses and nurse leaders to have less stress, more energy, and greater fulfillment in their personal and professional lives. Additionally, she offers coach training to others. Doris also owns a corporate wellness firm, Natural Health Resources, offering training and consulting to companies with a mission to improve the health of its workforce. Doris is a speaker and the author of Healthy Living in a Stress-Filled World — Workbook and Save the First Dance for You — The Complete Nurses Guide to Serving Your Profession, Your Patient, and Yourself.

Doris started her company while working on her PhD. She wanted to teach people how to deal with stress more effectively and bring spirituality into everyday life. After working with people in chronic pain, she found that this was an important part of healing and staying healthy. She also knew that approximately 75%-80% of all medical complaints are stress related. Doris notes, "[As a business owner] I like being able to focus on what I think is important and create the environment I enjoy working in. I love what I do, and I love the people I work with. I am passionate about the work I do, so it makes it joyful." She does admit that self-employment can get lonely at times.

Doris’s advice to other nurses considering becoming entrepreneurs: "Find your passion, make a plan for what you want to do and who you will do it for, decide how to accomplish you goals, and never give up."
