Dear Colleagues:

Summer is the perfect time to kick back and spend some quality time with family and friends. But don’t forget to take some time just for yourself. Care for the caregiver in you first and the rest will fall into place. Check out this month’s book pix for some light, yet powerful, summer reading and personal renewal.

The Power of Full Engagement
by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz
Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal

In the crazed non-stop world we live in, most of us are working longer and harder (or so we think) and are still barely keeping our heads above water. Yet, according to the authors, the longer and harder we work, the less productive we become if we do not develop a system for regular disengagement and energy renewal. Loehr and Schwartz effectively and simply demonstrate how to get fully engaged in life which they define as being physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused, and spiritually aligned with a purpose beyond our immediate self-interest. I have already read this powerful little book twice and it has, in many ways, made a profound difference in my life.

News You Can Use:
Advance for Nurses recently conducted a survey of nursing salaries. The survey showed that nearly half of the 11,000 respondents make $55,000 or more and very few earned less than $20,000. The report includes information about salaries relating to education, geographic location, unionization, certification, and other factors. Read the entire report .

Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Kathleen D. Pagana, RN, PhD is a nurse with the ‘write’ stuff. Among the 15 books she has written, she is co-author of Mosby’s Diagnostic and Laboratory Test Reference which is the number one best-selling book on the subject. It has sold more than 500,000 copies and has been translated into four languages. Her new book, The Momentum Factors, will be published in late 2005. Kathleen is also a speaker and consultant specializing in leadership, business etiquette, communication, and life balance. Kathleen began her professional career in the Army Nurse Corps, where she was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. She has also served as Chair of the Nursing Department at Lycoming College and Academic Dean for the college.

Kathleen’s business, Pagana Seminars and Presentations, is 2 years young. Kathleen loves the creative freedom that comes with being self-employed: “I love the challenge of being able to create something new.” The down-side to business ownership, she notes, is the loneliness: “It is a far cry from all the daily interaction I had with people when I worked for a college. So I have to keep myself motivated in other ways by getting out to professional association meetings, doing lunch, and networking all the time. I never had to network before.” When Kathy was in nursing school she recalls reading Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing. Ms. Nightingale wrote that the role of the nurse was to put patients in an environment of healing. Kathy notes, “That’s what a good speaker and consultant can do - try to move people into an environment where they can help themselves and ‘heal.’” Flo would be so proud.
