News You Can Use:
Nursing Gets a Boost From Recovery Act
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has slotted $500 million for education and training of health professionals. Nursing groups would like at least $100 million to go to the federal Nursing Workforce Development Programs, which offer loan repayments for nurses who work in underserved areas or teach in nursing schools; grants for advanced degree nursing programs; and grants to students from underrepresented minorities in nursing.

Updates about monies from the stimulus bill will be posted at www.hhs.gov/recovery

Quote of the Month:
So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.

Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Echo Heron, RN, is a New York Times bestselling and a pioneer author in the true medicine genre. Her first book, Intensive Care: The Story of a Nurse, was a brutally honest account of a nurse’s daily life behind the closed doors of a hospital's critical care unit. She penned seven other books, including a medical mystery thriller series.

Heron was a critical care RN for 18 years in the San Francisco Bay area. Today, she presents motivational and commencement speeches for nursing students and nurses, lectures for laypeople on how to protect themselves as patients and get the best healthcare available, and political lectures that cover topics like whistle-blowing, use of unlicensed personnel, understaffing, mandatory overtime, floating, gender discrimination, and union representation.
