Dear Colleagues:

This month’s newsletter offers a potpourri of information: find out about a medical romance and a website for disruptive women. Plus, I answer the question, "Is nursing a job or a profession?"

Happy Spring!

Critical Care
Candace Calvert

A nurse trying to make a fresh start at a small hospital finds herself first clashing with and then falling for a compelling ED doc in this medical/Christian romance. Author Calvert, a former ED nurse, says she’s honored to bring readers a new medical drama series offering exciting entertainment and a healthy dose of hope. In these challenging times, she thinks it’s exactly what the doctor ordered!

Donna's Blog
Is Nursing a Profession or a Job?

I recently read an article on the web where the nurse author’s stated intent was to “enlighten” future and prospective nurses to the “harsh realities” of the profession. The piece listed things like the physicality of the job, the necessity of doing shift work, and a proclamation that nursing is not a profession but just a job. Holy encephalopathy, Batman! Are we still having this conversation?

Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Vernon Dutton, RN, became interested in nursing pins more than 30 years ago when he was in nursing school. Today, he runs Nursing Pins, an online shop that sells early nursing school graduation pins, nursing memorabilia, and ephemera (historic paper goods).

Dutton says he’s built a six-figure business in five years with a $100 investment. He’s got a top 5 ranking in every search engine on the net and often gets 10,000 hits a day, and he never spent a cent on advertising.

Nursing Pins features the largest collection of nursing school pins on the net and rare historical items, such as the copy of Hildegard Peplau’s yearbook that he sold. His customers include educators on faculty at nearly every school of nursing in the U.S. and many in Canada.

To date, Dutton has reunited 14 graduation pins (one that was lost for 18 years) with the original owners. Are you missing yours? Now you know where to look!
