Dear Friends and Colleagues:

There’s already been a noticeable change in the temperature since Labor Day here on the east coast. I’m getting geared up to travel because fall is one of my busiest seasons. Why? There are lots of career fairs and conventions this time of year because of the mild weather across the country. That being said you’ll find a particularly long list of my upcoming public events in this month’s edition of Nursing ConnectionsTM along with an article on how to maximize your efforts at a career fair. I hope to see you at some of those events!

     Donna's Book Pix:
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcom Gladwell

This easy read is a fascinating look at how trends develop, tides turn, and epidemics get started…both medical and social. The book and the concepts it explores have many implications for nursing and healthcare demonstrating how a series of seemingly minor actions and events can take on critical mass and create a shift in thinking, in consumerism, and many other interesting ways. It underscores how one person or group of people can be more influential then they realize, often unwittingly. The book is also available on CD or audiocassette in both abridged and unabridged versions. Click here for more info.

Cool Nursing Web Site:
The Cherry Ames Page
This is a fun site about the ever popular Cherry Ames, RN series of books. There is information about the authors, the character herself (you thought you’ve had a lot of jobs!), collecting the books, and much more. There is also information about the more contemporary Carolyn Rhodes series of books. This one is sure to put a smile on your face.

Career Article:
How to Get the Most Out of Attending a Career Fair
Whether you are actively seeking employment or satisfied in your current position, career fairs are an important part of your ongoing career management plan. These events provide numerous benefits. In addition to keeping you abreast of industry changes, trends, and opportunities, they provide education and information on career and professional development issues. They also provide a great opportunity for making contacts and connections, in addition to giving you a sense of what kinds of jobs are available. In healthcare, as in many other careers and fields at present, change is the only constant. When you know what your employment options are, you're likely to feel less anxious about the future. News You Can Use:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agreed on September 16, 2004 to allow over the counter sales of an automatic electric defibrillator (AED) designed especially for lay consumers. The approval is for use of HeartStart home defibrillators without a prescription for adults and children at least 8 years old and weighing at least 55 pounds. A device used on younger children will still require a prescription. HeartStart can only be used when the individual does not respond to shaking and is not breathing normally. AED's are popping up everywhere these days as a means to save more lives in those crucial moments after a cardiac arrest before emergency personnel arrive on the scene. This clearly opens up the critical need for proper training and monitoring of appropriate utilization, technique, and equipment. (See this month's entrepreneur spotlight below). Find out more at the FDA.

Quote of the Month:
Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire. — Reggie Leach

Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Janet Celli, RN and Susan Whitney, RN operate a most ‘shocking’ business. They sell Automatic Electric Defibrillators (AED’s) and train and certify individuals and organizations in their use. “We have placed AED’s in law firms, churches, on golf courses and even on our expressway here in Florida. Every toll booth you go to in central Florida has a rescue ready AED and a supervisor that knows how to use it” says Janet. Janet and Susan are co-owners of CPR Associates and have over 25 years of combined nursing experience between them. In addition to AED sales and training, they provide CPR and first aid training and certification as well. Janet adds, “We are very passionate about our business because it brings the life saving capabilities that we have in the hospital out to the public. With 350,000 people a year or 1,000 people per day dying from cardiac arrest we can teach the lay public that they truly can make a difference.”

One of their clients is a country club in Hawaii where they placed 2 AED’s. They return to Maui every six months to do a refresher course with the appointed staff and check on their devices. Now there’s a business plan I like! Oh, did I mention that Susan and Janet are both avid golfers?
