Dear Colleagues:

Donna's Book Pix:
The Secret
Rhonda Byrne
This little book is making a huge impact. Based on the laws of attraction, it espouses that we each have the power within us to create the life we desire. This applies to health, wealth, and happiness. It is not simply another "positive thinking" book; rather it’s a convincing attempt to prove that we are the sum total of our thoughts, beliefs, and desires. The book is filled with quotes and insights from well-known and lesser-known teachers from the past and present to provide further substance to the message. If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for? The Secret is also available on CD and DVD.

Cool Nursing Web Site:

Quote of the Month:
The life I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt.
— Frederick Buechner

Donna’s Blog:
I have belonged to the National Speakers Association for more than 10 years. I knew that many of the members were nurses and would occasionally see some of my nursing colleagues at the convention. However, I knew there were many more nurses in the association whom I had never met and assumed the same held true for the rest of the bunch. So last year I made an effort to get all of the nurses together who were attending the convention so we could better get to know one another and support each other. Entrepreneur Spotlight:
Jill Thomas, RN, LNHA, CWCN, is owner of Advance Care Plan. With a background in long-term care she saw a need for people to identify and record their needs and preferences before they require long-term care services. Her company helps individuals create their own "advanced care plans" to record their lifestyles, histories, values, preferences, habits, and wishes for end-of-life care. This way, when illness or disability occurs, detailed information is readily available to facilities, agencies, caregivers, and other providers. Jill summarizes the finished product as "how you want to live your life in the care of others."

Like many entrepreneurs, Jill did not stop at one business. She is also the owner of Clinical Compliance Concepts, which she started six years ago. This company provides a variety of consulting services to long-term care facilities, including crisis management and clinical and regulatory compliance. It is here that she uses her additional credentials as a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA) and Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN).

Jill’s advice to other nurses considering entrepreneurship: "Be ready for a lot of highs and lows. It’s great when things are going well, but you can’t get discouraged when things aren’t going as you’d like them to or something you start doesn’t work out according to plan. You’ve got to stay on an even keel and keep moving forward. Celebrate your successes, but keep them in perspective and be prepared for less exciting times."
