Nurses Top List of Most Trusted Professionals Again;
Nursing Career Expert, Donna Cardillo, RN,
Continues to See Job Growth and Expanded Nursing Roles in the Changing Healthcare System
Sea Girt, NJ- The 2011 Gallup Poll rating honesty and ethical standards of professions, once again, has ranked nurses in the coveted number one position of most trusted professionals. The nursing profession has held this prestigious honor 12 times in the 13 years they have been included in the poll. They dropped to number two only in 2001, when firefighters were ranked number one.
Due to the aging baby boomer population and the ongoing need for healthcare providers, there is an anticipated shortage of nursing professionals. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an increase of almost 600,000 nursing positions by 2018. Not only is this field growing faster than all other professions, but in 2011 the healthcare sector added more jobs than any other area.
This trend will offer unlimited opportunities for nurses. "The future is very exciting for all nursing professionals, whether they are experienced or just starting out," says Donna Cardillo, President of Cardillo & Associates. "While many still perceive nurses in an 'assisting' role, we are full partners with physicians as part of the primary healthcare team with a distinct, yet vital, role. And as the healthcare needs of the population change and evolve, nurses will also be taking the lead in the management of chronic illness, health education, and wellness promotion." A recent study from the Institute of Medicine entitled "The Future of Nursing; Leading Change, Advancing Health", supports Ms. Cardillo's comments, and goes on to state that nurses should be an integral part of redesigning America's health care system.
Cardillo notes that most people think of nurses as working almost exclusively in hospitals, although only about 50% of nurses work in that setting. The other 50% are working in public health, schools, homecare, clinics, business and industry, their own private practice, for government agencies, and so on.
